Oyster Lease map - Keir Memorial Museum
History Of The Artefact:
This Oyster Lease Map made of Oil Skin, paint, canvass and wood was used to identify oyster leases of oyster beds on the Malpeque Bay. Oyster beds were leased and cultivated by fishermen and the beds were marked with buoys. The lease-holders would fish within their designated sections.
Land is indicated in black (Curtain and Ram Islands) and the reefs in yellow. The water is sectioned off and numbered showing the oyster beds leased.
Those sections in red were cultivated by the S.F. & Co. of Malpeque Ltd. The estimated date of this map is 1900 or earlier.
