Artefact History:
This knife had a variety of uses during WWII. The blade was kept inside the handle of the knife with the small lock on the side of the handle pushed back to lock it in. When you pushed the lever forward you would swing out your hand and the blade would pop out as it was spring loaded. You then pulled the lever back again to lock the blade in place. When you no longer needed to use it you pushed the lever forward and held the handle upright and the blade would slide back into the handle. There is also a spike attached to the handle that you pull out and could use for opening your food or other various needs.
